Hockessin facilities offer much to the community

The Village of Hockessin (an unincorporated area of New Castle County) is home to the PAL center on Lancaster Pike, which offers activities and clubs for youth from 8-18 years old.  Another recent feature is Tweed's Park, which contains the over 200 year old log Tweed's Tavern (moved from a nearby location) and the Hockessin Athletic Club, all at the corner of Valley Rd. and Limestone Rd. This is across the road from Lantana Square Shopping Center, which contains a grocery store, restaurants, health facilities, banks, and other businesses. Nearby is the Hockessin Library, a modern facility currently being enlarged due to its popularity.

Town meetings widely attended

With the feeling of a small town and the conveniences of modern life, Smyrna residents enjoy many community events and particupate in meetings of the town council at the Town Hall. The 1869 Opera House building, which also hosts the town library, was restored and re-opened in 2003 and now hosts concerts, performances, and the annual Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Assn. Auction.

Grain Trading center

In the 19th Century, Smyrna (originally Duck Creek Crossroads) merchants shipped grain to mills on the Brandywine Creek in Wilmington, and from there, grain was shipped to ports on the east coast and Europe.  Smyrna's grid street plan was laid out in 1817 . In 1855, a rail line 2 miles west in Clayton provided more growth in town. This is when the most of the town historic district's vibrant Italianate and Victorian Gothic homes were built.

Early Odessa History

Odessa's early history began in the 1660s when the Dutch settled the Appoquinimink area and adopted the Indian name for the area, "Apequinemy." Its location along the river gave hopes of establishing a trading route with colonies to the west. The English began to colonize the region and peacefully gained control in 1664. The British granted the previously held Dutch area to Captain Edmund Cantwell, the first sheriff of New Castle County under the government of William Penn.

History and Industry in Odessa

The historic atmosphere of Odessa is the town's most prominent characteristic. The historic district and several individual buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.  In 1731, Richard Cantwell erected a toll bridge over the Appoquinimink Creek, called Cantwell's Bridge, and the town took the same name. In 1767, William Corbit opened the first industry in the town, a tannery. 1817 saw a blacksmith shop established, and in 1855  bank was incorporated. Later industries included fertilizers, fruit drying and canning.

Changing of the Flags over New Castle

New Castle, Delaware was originally settled by the Dutch in 1651, under Peter Stuyvesant The original name of New Castle was Fort Casimir. This was changed to "Trefaldigheet" ("Trinity") following its capture by the Swedes on Trinity Sunday, 1654. The Dutch recaptured the city in 1655 changing the name to New Amstel.  The British routed the Dutch in 1664 andit became New Castle. The Dutch again seized the town in 1673 but it was returned to Great Britain the next year under the Treaty of Westminster. In 1680 it was conveyed to William Penn by the Duke of York and he landed here to claim the area in 1682.

New Castle's Geographic Importance

The spire on top of the Court House - Delaware's Colonial capitol and first state house - was used as the center of the 12 mile circle forming the northern boundary of Delaware and part of the Mason-Dixon Line. The Delaware River within this radius to the low water mark on the opposite shore is part of Delaware. Thus the Delaware Memorial Bridge was built as an intrastate span by Delaware, without financial participation by neighboring New Jersey.

Industrial Growth of Wilmington

The borough of Wilmington officially became a city in 1832, when a charter was granted by the State legislature.  The Industrial Revolution era was reflected in Wilmington with events such as the 1837 completion of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad which made the City accessible by water, road and rail on the main north-south transportation route. The area's economy flourished as businesses and skilled labor provided resources for growing industries.

History of the city of Wilmington, Delaware

Wilmington, like most eastern cities, has been evolving for over 350 years.  After periods of Swedish (1638), then Dutch (1655), then British (1664) colonization, (with Quaker influence) and was granted a borough charter in 1739 by the King of England From the granting of the charter until the Revolution, the town developed steadily into a prosperous business and residential community.  During the Revolution, its milling industries, geographic location, key leaders and resources made Wilmington particularly strategic.

Guidelines to Improvements to an older home

If you are fortunate enough to live in an old house, proceed with caution if you plan to sell it within the next year and feel you need to "improve" it.  Before spending over $1000 on a new kitchen, bath, or other major projects, consult an experienced Realtor who deals frequently with selling old houses.  We often find that sellers jump into projects which suit their taste, but may not fit in with future buyers' taste.  I have seen sellers tear out walls and install baths just to update an old house right before putting it on the market.  The problem is, it may look great in your eyes but net you less than  if you had just sold it "as is" to one of the buyers who frequently want to buy a reasonably priced home and perhaps retain more of the old house feel and put in their own "sweat equity" doing so.

It is similar to my putting a new transmission  in a car before selling it, only to find out the mechanic who bought it would have done the work himself and saved me the over $2000 I spent on the transmission.
